The People Behind the Lodge
Kodiak Wilderness Lodge isn't a brand. It's a life β one we've chosen on purpose, every single day.
John Niel
For 20 years, John Niel jumped out of helicopters into the North Pacific to pull people out of the water. As a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer, he made a career of showing up in the worst possible moments and making sure everyone got home safe. That's not a job you leave behind β it becomes who you are.
John brought all of it to the lodge: the calm under pressure, the instinct to read conditions before they turn, the absolute refusal to cut corners when someone else's safety is on the line. On the water, guests are in the hands of someone who has spent his life earning the right to be trusted in Alaska's wildest places.
Off the water he's the guy who's first to laugh, last to complain, and always up for one more story before bed. He knows these waters the way most people know their own backyard β every tide, every species, every spot worth fishing. And he genuinely wants to be there. Our guests said it best: "Most Alaskan guides are pretty salty and set in their ways. These people wanted to be there."
Sarah Harrington
Sarah is the reason guests feel at home before they've finished unpacking.
Rooted in Alaska Native traditions and raised with a deep connection to this land and its people, she brings something to the lodge that can't be hired or manufactured β a sense of place, of history, of genuine belonging. She is the matriarch of this family and the heartbeat of this operation: the one who makes sure the food is extraordinary, the spaces feel alive, and every single person who walks through the door knows they are truly welcome.
She is also endlessly curious β about ideas, about people, about the world outside the bay. She reads voraciously, makes art, volunteers in her community, and raises her children to meet life with open eyes and open hands. When you sit across from Sarah at the dinner table, you'll find yourself talking longer than you planned, because she is actually listening.
One guest summed it up simply: "Sarah." Just that. That was their answer when asked what they liked best about the lodge.
Together John and Sarah have built something that reflects exactly who they are β wild and warm in equal measure, serious about the land, serious about their guests, and completely incapable of doing anything halfway. When you come to Kodiak Wilderness Lodge, you're not booking a service. You're being invited into their world.
We think you're going to love it here.
