Into the Rivers

There's a different kind of quiet on the rivers. Out on the bay the scale of everything is enormous — mountains, open water, sky going forever. On the river it gets intimate. You're reading the water, watching for the flash of silver, feeling the current against your waders. It's just you and whatever's moving upstream.

Kodiak's rivers run thick with salmon through the season — sockeye, pink, silver — and our guided freshwater trips take you into that world by foot, by boat, or by kayak. For guests who want to learn fly fishing for the first time, this is where it happens. There's no better classroom than a river full of fish and a guide who's patient enough to show you exactly what to do.

One of our 2025 guests arrived never having held a fly rod. She left having landed her first fish on the fly, watched wild horses graze the hillside above the river, and spotted deer and foxes she couldn't have imagined from home. That's the freshwater experience at Kodiak Wilderness Lodge.

Never fly fished before? Good. We love teaching people.
